Steffen Rösner of Kemnitz,
Germany on the bridge of the Trans Pacific Lines Eagle, while
loading up at the Port of San Francisco.
Rösner is Chief Engineer of the Eagle,
a modern container ship out of Germany. Just a few hours after this
shot was taken he and his ship were on their way to Hong Kong, a
14-day sail away.
The Port of Oakland is the port
of choice for most cargo passing through the Bay Area and destined
for some other part of the country, usually by train. But the Port
of San Francisco still does a brisk business with carriers like
Trans Pacific Line bringing products to people and businesses in the
immediate Bay Area.
Shipping lines serving South
America, the Far East and the Pacific Islands still regularly call
at San Francisco’s Pier 80, where the day we took this picture a
steady stream of trucks shuttled containers to and fro the Eagle.
We wanted to ask what it’s like to be Chief Engineer of the Eagle
but Rösner, all German efficiency, was having none of it. All the
while we were taking this shot he was telling us, "Gotta go.
Gotta go."
