Urban wine connoisseurs no longer have to drive all the way to the Napa Valley to sample great wine. We agree the island of Alameda’s an unlikely place for a ribbon-winning winery, but this East Bay vintner is producing some of the finest Zinfandels in the state. What began as a DIY experiment for a local veterinarian in the kitchen of his home has blossomed into one of the most esteemed labels in the country. In fact, owner Kent Rosenblum’s having a hard time just keeping up with the demand. The surrounding area may not be quite as picturesque as its Wine Country peers (the winery is located in an old shipyard), but the view of the bay and the tasty offerings make it a worthwhile trip on a lazy afternoon. Of course, for those of you insistent on the whole Wine Country experience, Rosenblum also has a tasting room in Healdsburg.

Rodney Strong began selling his wines out of a little building in Tiburon back in 1959 before moving the entire operation to Healdsburg two years later to be closer to his vineyards. Since then, the Windsor name’s become synonymous with quality, famous the world over for its 40 uniquely different varieties of red and white wines. In fact, Windsor’s won more awards in the last three years than any other winemaker in the United States. How about that? Visiting winos are invited to sample Windsor’s extensive selection at either (or both) of the company’s tasting rooms. One is located in downtown Tiburon and the other is a little further up Hwy. 101 in lovely Healdsburg.
