The District is facing a $202
million shortfall for the coming five years with $145 million
targeted to come from expense cutbacks of which the primary savings
will be achieved through this 30% reduction in bus service. The
remaining $57 million is targeted to come from revenue generation
including transit fare increases. The November 2, 2003 service
restructuring will result in savings of $18.5 million in annual
operating costs. With extensive public input, the new service was
developed to minimize customer impacts to every extent possible and
result in 1.7% of weekday and 2.1% of weekend passengers having no
service alternative.
