Farmer’s
Markets are Ferry Good for You
Come late March, the Ferry Building;
San Francisco civic symbol, original home to the Port and keystone
of the regional waterfront, will bustle with life and commerce again
after years of restoration work. The new Ferry Building has
attracted San Francisco’s Farmer’s Market, which plans to move
there in time for the opening. We wanted to learn more about this
waterfront feature attraction, so this month, in a specially
expanded version of Working Waterfront, we visit with a Farmer’s
Market stalwart Nigel Walker, co-proprietor of Eatwell Farms. |

Something
Old, Something New for San Francisco Waterfront
What recession? The soon-to-reopen
Ferry Building is just one of many great things happening on the San
Francisco waterfront worth getting worked up over. Plans for the
Jerry Herman Cruise Terminal, named after the beloved Longshoremen
leader, are ploughing ahead as are, of course, WTA’s plans for
comprehensive regional ferry service and more. Bay Crossing’s
Senior Editor Wes Starratt makes it all comprehensible for you. |

New
York’s Turn to Cope with Ferry Environmentalists
When not bedeviling SUV manufacturers
(by devising a California law that limits greenhouse gases, giving
the Bush administration fits), banishing water-skis or holding the
cruise industry to account, the eco-warriors at San Francisco-based
Bluewater Network somehow found the time to turn the screws on San
Francisco Bay ferry planners. The result is a WTA plan headed to the
legislature packed with environmental protections and improvements.
Meanwhile, ferry service in New York and environs expands by leaps
and bounds. Watch out, East Coast ferry operators: Bluewater is
headed your way. |
