Charlene Johnson, President of WTA, proves it to George that there really isn’t money yet for a comprehensive regional ferry service for the Bay Area, but the WTA is working hard to build the case to persuade the Legislature. Hopefully, beleaguered commuters won’t have to wait until George takes over Nichols Brothers before ordering up the first of many more new ferryboats, though George demonstrates the entrepreneurial zeal here that indicates he’ll be ready when the moment comes.

 

"Do I have to?" Practical matters such as these matter to regular ferry riders, and it’s Bay Crossing’s – and George’s – happy duty to report that the M.V. Mendocino has dandily modern bathroom facilities.

 

George strikes a debonair pose in one of the M.V. Mendocino’s engine rooms. There are four engines, in fact, each of them generating 1600 horsepower. She’ll make it from Larkspur to San Francisco in 30 minutes, carrying up to 408 passengers and 15 bikes.
