New,
fabric seating is much more comfortable. George models on the
fantail.

Charlene
Johnson, President of WTA, proves it to George that there really
isn’t money yet for a comprehensive regional ferry service for
the Bay Area, but the WTA is working hard to build the case to
persuade the Legislature. Hopefully, beleaguered commuters won’t
have to wait until George takes over Nichols Brothers before
ordering up the first of many more new ferryboats, though George
demonstrates the entrepreneurial zeal here that indicates he’ll
be ready when the moment comes.

"Do
I have to?" Practical matters such as these matter to regular
ferry riders, and it’s Bay Crossing’s – and George’s
– happy duty to report that the M.V. Mendocino has dandily
modern bathroom facilities.

George
strikes a debonair pose in one of the M.V. Mendocino’s engine
rooms. There are four engines, in fact, each of them generating
1600 horsepower. She’ll make it from Larkspur to San Francisco
in 30 minutes, carrying up to 408 passengers and 15 bikes.

Proud father of
two. Matt Nichols, President of Nichols Bros. Boat Builders with
two of his proudest creations. Last minute problems that caused
many 24-hour workdays for Matt probably made it seem, at least in
the case of the M.V Mendocino, that he really was
giving birth. |
