Bayview Youth Sail and Kayak at San Francisco’s India Basin Park

America True gives local youth an opportunity to enjoy the southeastern waterfront

For many youth in India Basin and Bayview/Hunter’s Point, August 14th marked the first time they had experienced San Francisco Bay. America True Sailing Programs, Santa Cruz Fleet 240, City Kayak, Grand Prix Sailing Academy, the Dolphin Club, and The Mills Corporation joined together to give many disadvantaged children and teenagers the opportunity to experience sailing, the wind in their faces, and the carefree joy of leaving their troubles ashore.

On that glorious Saturday, organizers transformed India Basin Shoreline Park into a classroom for the area’s brand-new sailors and kayakers. American’s Cup sailor Dawn Riley and many other Bay Area aquatics experts introduced youth from San Francisco’s southeastern neighborhoods to recreational opportunities in their unexplored water-based playground.

“America True was delighted to have an opportunity to show young people how sailing can be a fun, eye-opening experience, and that it can be done in their own backyard. Eventually they will be able to use this experience at the Piers 27-31 project,” said Dawn Riley, CEO of America True. “This particular program is one of many where we use sailing to boost kids’ confidence and independence and teach them teamwork as well as respect for their environment.” Participants had their choice of water transportation–Hobie Cats, whaleboats, and kayaks were on the beach.
India Basin Shoreline Park is a rare sliver of nature located in one of San Francisco’s historically industrial neighborhoods. Established in 1996, the park is situated next to the newly restored wetland habitat of Heron’s Head Park and located on the scenic Bay Trail.

“I am proud to help America True introduce India Basin Shoreline Park as a real recreational outlet that is accessible to our city’s youth,” said San Francisco Supervisor Sophie Maxwell, who represents the city’s southeastern neighborhoods. “It is important for them to see that this great natural resource exists in their own backyard.’’
