On September 17, 2004, the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District awarded a contract for ferry terminal security enhancements budgeted at nearly $900,000, with $520,000 coming from a federal Port Security Grant awarded by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the remaining coming from a combination of District and Federal Transportation Administration funds.

Built in 1976 and 1978, the Golden Gate Larkspur and San Francisco Ferry Terminals have undergone minor changes and remodels over the years. Responding to the national security events of the past several years, Golden Gate Ferry is complying with the requirements of the TSA, the Maritime Administration, and the United States Coast Guard to further secure our facilities.
This project focuses on security enhancements that include installing surveillance cameras, perimeter security panels and gates, and backup communications equipment. As construction progresses, ferry customers will notice the addition of a new security wall system along various entrance points at the terminals. To preserve the general open nature of the terminals and to not impede views of the Bay, the new security wall system will be constructed of transparent polycarbonate.
Construction will begin on Monday, November 1, 2004, and will take about four months to complete. During this time, there are no significant passenger or service disruptions anticipated.
