On October 9th, James R. Hooper was appointed to the Golden Gate Bridge and Highway transportation District representing Del Norte County, which joined the district in 1925.
Vallejo Ferry Accident
According to website for Baylink, the ferry accident occurred at 3:40 PM on Saturday October 11 as the Mare Island approached the dock at Pier 1 in San Francisco. The Captain had slowed for docking and most likely changed to reverse as he transferred helm control to the wing bridge (which is normal procedure). However, the transfer of control was not completed and the vessel began to back uncontrollably and collided with the protective pilings nearby. The preliminary contributing cause is human error.
Damage to the Mare Island was estimated at $110,000 (structural damage, exhaust system damage and destruction of the water jet guard). Piling damage was estimated at $10,000. The Captain has been barred from further Baylink service until the Coast Guard investigation is complete. The Mare Island is due back in service on November 21

Want To Run A Ferry Service?
The Alameda-Oakland Ferry Service is putting out an RFP for ferry operators to run both the Alameda-Oakland Ferry and the Harbor Bay Ferry. Bidders have a number of options, as they can either bid for just one service, both services and/or with a cost plus or fixed price contract. Smaller companies will be encouraged to bid, as they can post a performance bond in lieu of experience or financial strength. Copies of the RFP can be obtained from the Planning Office at City Hall in Alameda.
