2003 Sea Music Concert Series
EXPERIENCE DRIVING CHANTS,
elegant instrumentals and delicate harmonies reverberating from the wooden decks of our historic fleet! Join us for rare evenings of sailors’ songs, sweet ballads and working chanteys! Now in its fifteenth year, the park’s Sea Music Concert series has become a San Francisco music tradition. In October, Bay Area favorite Mystic Seaport Forebitter (Saturday, 10/18 8PM, $12) will blend intricate harmonies, a cappella singing, banjo, concertina, fiddle, guitar, mandolin, whistles and percussion into a fun and lively evening. In November, Seattle duo William Pint and Felicia Dale (Saturday, 11/15, 8PM, $12) will perform traditional and modern music and "songs reflecting the immense vitality of those who live and work on the sea." The energetic couple captivate their audiences with vocals and guitar, mandola, Irish pennywhistles and percussion. Master Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser will perform the December finale concert (Friday, 12/12, 8PM, $14). His richly expressive playing ranges from haunting laments in the Gaelic tradition ,to classically-styled airs, to raucous dance tunes, to improvisations based on traditional themes. And his repertoire spans several centuries of Scottish music. All concerts at 8pm, aboard an historic vessel at Hyde Street Pier. Join us for The Hunley, with Armand Assante and Donald Sutherland in the dramatic story of the Confederate Navy’s hand-powered submarine. Ranger Tom Jares will follow with a discussion of the recent discovery and raising of the Hunley from the bottom of Charleston harbor.
Classes and Workshops
An Introduction to Boatbuilding (WoodenBoat School Class)
October 20-25. Fee: $600. Instructor: Bill Thomas
Build the Karl Stambaugh Bay Skiff 15 using marine plywood and epoxy using a modified glue-and-screw type construction. Bill takes you step-by-step through the building stages: stem, transom and frame construction; planking; breasthook and quarterknee installation; thwarts and interior trim; daggerboard and case construction; mast, boom and rudder assemblies, all will come together. Discussions will focus on small-craft design, setting up a one-man shop, proper hand and power tool usage and more. No prior boatbuilding experience required.
Fine Woodstrip Kayak Construction (WoodenBoat School Class)
October 12-18. Fee: $600. Instructor: Ted Moores
Designer, writer, canoe builder, and restorer Ted Moores will introduce students to a strip planked sea kayak. By week’s end each student should have a strong grasp of wood/epoxy strip construction and be ready to start their own project at home. And one student will be the lucky new owner of a beautiful Ted Moores designed sea kayak.

John Kowalla hosts the Modelers Workshop on the car deck of the Eureka Saturdays October 3, 4 and 17. The public is invited to stop by and pick up tips, or just watch the modelers in action.
