Tom Wylie and crew are taking people, primarily from the education community, sailing on San Francisco Bay. Currently based at the Berkeley Marina fuel dock, the vessel is available for demo sails and contracted outings for interested parties. The original and primary purpose of the vessel since its conception by boat designer Tom Wylie and builder David Wahle,two years ago, is for the education and scientific community. This prototype vessel was named for the engineer "who make things work" at the Monterey Bay Aquarium who was a significant mentor to both Tom and Dave. Derek Baylis, in his 80s, is also the father of the Yachtswoman of the Year, Liz Baylis, who christened the vessel when it was launched in Moss Landing last May (see Bay Crossings June 2003).
The 65’ Cat Ketch came to San Francisco Bay after completion of the rigging at the end of summer. They have taken out 25-35 people comfortably to watch the Big Boat Series, Moet Cup, and have had great fun taking out a few initial school groups. Before leaving Monterey Bay, they took water samples for the Monterey Bay Aquarium and are in conversation with Moss Landing Marine Lab. As a boat designer and builder, Tom is new to the "chartering business" but is open to the possibilities of charters in addition to setting up programs for schools and research groups on this fast, stable, and comfortable vessel.
