The California Maritime Academy invites Bay Crossings readers to its Sixth Annual Gala Saturday, March 27 at the Westin St. Francis Hotel on Union Square in San Francisco. Gala chairs Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Aspland look forward to another successful event, the proceeds from which will benefit the cadets at the Academy.

In addition to an evening of great food and camaraderie, the event presents a wonderful opportunity for guests to network with alumni, parents and colleagues in the maritime industry, while raising scholarship support for today’s generation of cadets.

The 2009 Gala raised $120,000 for scholarships and educational programs for the Academy and we hope for a significant increase in 2010. For information about corporate/business sponsorships and/or information about donating an item or trip to the auction, contact Silvia Regalado at sregalado@csum.edu or (707) 654-1299.

Industry Association to Hold Educational Dinner

Founded in 1963, the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) is the leading worldwide professional association dedicated to education, research, and the advancement of the supply chain management profession. With over 9,000 members globally, representing business, government, and academia from 63 countries, CSCMP members are the leading practitioners and authorities in the fields of logistics and supply chain management.

CSCMP’s San Francisco Bay Area Roundtable will also be staging a number of celebratory and educational events this season. A leader among CSCMP’s 96 global Roundtables, the Bay Area Roundtable is recognized for its powerful dinner programs featuring world-class supply chain management innovators, its successful sponsor and community relationships and its Annual Half-Day Spring Seminar.

Shippers are already gearing up for the next affair: “Domestic vs. International Manufacturing Pros and Cons.” This is an educational dinner discussing the relative merits of off-shoring vs. near-shoring, and is bound to generate heated discussion among environmentalists and proponents of globalization.

Mark your calendars for February 18, 5:30 – 8 p.m. The event will be held at the South San Francisco Basque Cultural Center. The prices are as follows: CSCMP Members, $55; General Admission, $65; Student, $25. For more information, visit cscmpsfrt.wildapricot.org.

Women In Logistics Provides Unique Support for Its Members

Another worthwhile shipping association worth checking out this season is Women in Logistics (WIL), a group dedicated to providing resources for professionals in the business of logistics, transportation, supply chain management and technology. Its goal is to maintain an information resource network for career development, mentoring and educational opportunities.

The group’s history is unique. Formerly Women in Transportation, it was founded by Stacy Roth in the 1980s in response to the lack of networking groups for women in the industry. Prior to that time, women who worked in the field of transportation had few resources available to fulfill their needs to support career growth.

The group’s initial meetings were roundtable forums where members brainstormed about how to structure the group to suit their professional career goals. From these informal gatherings, it was confirmed that women wanted and needed a professional environment where they could network with each other as well as develop business contacts. They also wanted an avenue to keep current on the latest industry actions and trends.

Ultimately, the organization’s focus and insight into important, relevant topics led to its success as a viable organization. Furthermore, it is the only logistics organization in the United States that provides mentoring resources for its members. Today, WIL has nearly 400 members and offers services to both men and women. Each year, the baton is handed over to a new group of officers and directors whose responsibility it is to keep the organization flush with new ideas and promote its growth.

Forward-looking as it is, WIL nevertheless maintains a foot planted in the twentieth century—its snail mail address is: Women in Logistics, c/o Helene Bunch, 1056 Stoneybrook Drive, Martinez, CA 94553-4180.
