Capitalizing on the boom in small urban wine production, experienced tour leader Jon Zalon is offering bike tours of the wineries of the East Bay. Zalon has designed tours for corporate team-building, visitors to the Bay Area, or residents looking for a local “staycation” day trip.

“If you saw the movie Bottle Shock then you are in for a real treat,” said Zalon, “because with the urban wineries, you can get barrel tastings, and a real look at the process, like in the movie. Whereas in Napa, you have to drive, and sometimes even beat traffic, to taste wine poured by people who don’t always have a real stake in the product, when you taste at the urban wineries, you are getting an education from the makers themselves. That is a thing of the past in Napa.”

Zalon stresses that the ride is easy, on totally flat ground. As an experienced tour leader, he can deftly change a flat tire. A simple, elegant lunch is included in the price of the tour. The tour is easily accessible by public transportation from San Francisco, and includes tasting fees, and a ferry ride.
