This spring, three U.S. Coast Guard vessels—the 175-ft. buoy-tender George Cobb; the 225-ft. cutter Hickory and the 110-ft. cutter Edisto—joined the long list of U.S. Coast Guard vessels that have undergone periodic maintenance and repair at Bay Ship & Yacht in Alameda on San Francisco Bay. Ship maintenance in dry-dock is just one of the many facets of the working waterfront, and we devote this issue to exploring the vast opportunities for waterborne commerce, employment, transportation and recreation that the Bay Area provides.
