The New East Span, Through an Engineer’s Lens
East Span engineer Martin Chandrawinata goes where few have been: over, under, around and through the new Bay Bridge East Span as it is being constructed, with his professional camera in hand. Although trained as a professional engineer, he brings an artist’s eye to the task of documenting construction progress on this monumental project, one camera frame at a time. Now his photos are on public display for the first time, in a show at the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) titled "Through an Engineer’s Lens." Located at the MetroCenter at 101 Eighth Street in Oakland, the show continues through May 31. Check in with the MTC receptionist on the third floor to access the second-floor exhibit, which is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (510) 817-5700.
Earth Day Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed at select California state parks on Saturday, April 13 for the 16th Annual California State Parks Foundation’s Earth Day Restoration & Cleanup presented by PG&E. California’s parks continue to be underfunded, with a 33 percent reduction in general funding over the past four years and $1.3 billion in deferred maintenance. Businesses and individuals are sought to actively participate with their communities to help restore the beauty and glory of California’s treasured state parks. Trail and campground improvements, trash cleanup, installing railings, tree planting and restoring wildlife habitats are just some of the projects planned for this Earth Day. Since its inception in 1998, the Earth Day Restoration & Cleanup program has resulted in 78,394 participants contributing more than 326,582 volunteer hours worth nearly $6.25 million in park maintenance and improvements. Additionally, more than $4.3 million has been raised for the Earth Day program. For a complete list of volunteer sites and times, visit www.calparks.org/earthday or call (888) 98-PARKS.

Anything Worth Doing, a 2012 National Outdoor Book Award Winner, concerns the lives of two raft guides whose decade of river adventures starts out beautifully and ends in tragedy.
