Vallejo’s Waterfront Weekend

The City of Vallejo is reviving the Vallejo Waterfront Weekend for a two-day, fun- and activity-filled weekend October 4 and 5. The event will feature music, food, entertainment and activities for the entire family. There will be a Whale Boat Regatta, chili cook-off, celebrity dunk tank, classic car show and a concert by the Beatles tribute band the Sun Kings. On Saturday, October 4, the nonprofit organization Foster Greatness will host a 5K run/walk and 10K run experience called the Waterfront Glow Run. The race begins as the sun sets at 6:48 p.m., and the course will take all participants through beautiful historic Vallejo, past the waterfront on a well-lit and fun-filled “glowing” trail. The 10K runners will cross the Mare Island causeway on a course that will take them by historic buildings from the bygone years when the Mare Island Naval Shipyard was at its zenith. Both the 5K and 10K participants will end their experience where they started and join the “After Glow” party and celebration. The race will raise money for Foster Greatness so that it can continue helping foster teens with some of the essentials they may not normally be able to afford given their circumstances. A portion of the funds raised will also be shared with its community partner, the Mira Community Cultural Center, in order to help it raise funds to rebuild its deteriorating historic building.

MarinMOCA’s Seventh Annual Art by the Inch

Every year, MarinMOCA artists give of their time and talents to create a fabulous 100-foot mural to fundraise for the museum. This year’s theme is “Art by the Inch Goes WILD,” with inspiration from such animals as the american kestrel, red-tailed hawk, northern spotted owl, fox squirrel and more. Guests are invited to come select their favorite section to cut out and take home. The mural will be sold for $1 per square inch and guests can choose any section or size they like. The Art by the Inch exhibit will be open October 11-25, culminating in the big fundraising celebration on October 25 from 5 to 8 p.m. Curious visitors are encouraged to stop by the gallery to see the artists working on the mural and also to get a glimpse of their favorite section ahead of time, as the mural artwork will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis on October 25th. The Marin Museum of Contemporary Art is located at the Novato Arts Center at Hamilton Field, 500 Palm Drive in Novato. Hours are Wednesday through Friday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit the website at www.marinmoca.org or call (415) 506-0137 for more information.

Oakland Art Auction

Oakland Art Murmur, a nonprofit organization committed to raising awareness of and participation in the visual arts in Oakland, is gearing up for Flourish Oakland, its annual fundraising party and art auction, taking place Saturday, October 11 at Classic Cars West, 411 26th Street in Oakland. Oakland Art Murmur is offering the public an opportunity to purchase artworks in advance of the auction in an online marketplace, under “buy it now” terms, at 110 percent of retail. Anything that does not sell before October 11 will be offered in a silent auction at the Flourish Oakland event, with bids starting at 50 percent of regular retail prices. The auction will present works by emerging and mid-career artists sourced from OAM’s member galleries and donated by the artists themselves. Prices will start at $40 for drawings produced onsite at the event by an “Artist in Action,” and one section of the auction will be filled with works priced under $500 (with bids starting as low as $100). The evening will celebrate more than just visual arts, with live jazz from the Oakland Manouche Project and cameos by Oakland Ballet dancers. Food from Michelin-star chef Daniel Patterson’s Haven and Plum Bar, as well as wood-fired organic pizzas made onsite by Fist of Flour will highlight the culinary arts, complemented by desserts from Sweet Bar Bakery and drinks donated by Trumer Pils, Blue Moon, and Pat Paulsen Wines. Former KPIX news anchor and artist Dana King will be the master of ceremonies, and over $3,000 in raffle prizes, including gift certificates to Oakland’s top restaurants and entertainment venues, will be awarded.
