WETA Issues Statement in Response to Sinbad's Restaurant

The lease holder from Sinbad's Pier 2 Restaurant recently stated publicly that a representative from the Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) informed the restaurant management that it could stay at its present location at Pier Two past the end of its lease with the Port of San Francisco. However, WETA, which operates the San Francisco Bay Ferry fleet, subsequently issued a statement clarifying that it is simply a tenant of the Port of San Francisco and has no authority to make any commitment on behalf of its landlord.

The lease holder from Sinbad’s Pier 2 Restaurant recently stated publicly that a representative from the Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) informed the restaurant management that it could stay at its present location at Pier Two past the end of its lease with the Port of San Francisco. However, WETA, which operates the San Francisco Bay Ferry fleet, subsequently issued a statement clarifying that it is simply a tenant of the Port of San Francisco and has no authority to make any commitment on behalf of its landlord.

“WETA does not have a relationship with Sinbad’s Pier 2 Restaurant, other than the fact that both WETA and Sinbad’s are tenants of the Port of San Francisco,” said WETA Executive Director Nina Rannels.

WETA noted that it is working in close partnership with the Port of SF and Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) to expand ferry terminal facilities at the Ferry Building. The port has contractual agreements with BCDC to remove landside development on Pier 2 for improvements under the Special Area Plan for the Ferry Building area.

“WETA supports the port’s efforts to comply with the BCDC requirement that Pier 2 landside development be removed, thereby improving public views of the Bay and allowing needed expansion of the Ferry Building ferry docks,” Rannells said. “Expansion of those facilities is a pre-condition to expanding ferry service on the Bay and providing ferry services in the event of a regional emergency.”
