The second annual World Dog Surfing Championships will take place on August 5 at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica. Top dog surfers as well as happy amateurs are invited to compete to bring home the Golden Surfie as the event brings together the best in local and international dog surfing talent. The event offers a number of activities, including the surf competition, dog beach fashion contest, dog adoptions, partner tents and other activities. Entrants can also help fundraise for animal charities, including the Peninsula Humane Society and Rocket Dog Rescue. Other partners include Pet Renu, Fido Pet Products and Clubcard Printing. Paws for a Cause
It’s time to move your paws for a cause at Napa Humane’s sixth annual Walk for Animals, a summer morning stroll along Napa’s Riverfront (with or without your pooch) on Sunday, August 6 from 7:30 a.m. to noon in support of companion animals throughout the Napa Valley. More than 400 walkers will strut their stuff at this dog- and family-friendly morning fundraising event. Animal-loving walkers register online for the event and create a personalized profile page, set a fundraising goal, and have the option to join or create a team. In support of their participation, walkers then collect donations from family, friends and colleagues by distributing their profile link via email, Facebook and Twitter. Beginning and ending at Oxbow Commons on Napa’s McKinstry Street, registered walkers receive an official Walk for Animals t-shirt and goodie bag, and enjoy a morning full of music, contests, fun games, activities and more as they come together to raise funds for Napa Humane. Walk for Animals is a fun-filled family event and everyone is welcome to participate with their dogs, or in honor of or memory of a beloved pet, with all proceeds benefiting Napa Humane’s lifesaving programs and services for Napa Valley pets and the people who care for and about them. Clear the Shelters
Nearly 700 animal shelters across the country, including the East Bay SPCA and other local rescues, are teaming up with NBC and Telemundo for “Clear the Shelters”—a nationwide pet adoption drive on Saturday, August 19 with a mission to help find forever homes for animals in need by waiving all adoption fees. More than 50,000 pets nationwide found their forever homes on this day in 2016. Join the East Bay SPCA for a fun day of waived adoption fees for cats and dogs at both locations (Oakland and Dublin) and help them achieve their goal to clear all of their kennels. Don’t miss this fun-filled event and chance to take home a new furry friend. 54th Annual Benicia Peddlers Fair
The Benicia Peddlers Fair is one of Northern California’s oldest and most popular antique and collectibles street fairs. For over 50 years, customers and vendors throughout the region have come to enjoy Benicia’s wonderful weather and beautiful waterfront setting. This outdoor event began in 1963 with a few collectible and antique stores displaying their items on tables outside St. Paul’s Church. It has grown into 300 select antique and collectible dealers from all over the country and more than 20,000 loyal fans. The fair now spans the entire 11 blocks of First Street, with beautiful views of the Carquinez Strait. The show offers connoisseurs and new collectors alike an opportunity to examine and purchase items that include period furniture, decorative antiques, vintage textiles and fashion, pottery, porcelain, pink and blue Depression glass, paintings, prints, jewelry, clocks, watches and much more. The fair gives the public a rare opportunity to ask questions of knowledgeable dealers and witness firsthand the rare history of our great country. This year’s fair will be held on Saturday, August 12 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located from J Street to the waterfront.
Pickin’ on the Potomac
Two different musical performances will take place on the famous Presidential yacht Potomac in August. On Sunday, August 6 from 3 to 5 p.m., enjoy blues on the water with a two-hour cruise and wonderful live blues music from the Gary Mendoza Band—a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon! Beer, wine and nibbles are available for purchase. Tickets are $55 per person. Then, on Friday, August 25, have a stompin’ good time from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. with fantastic bluegrass music from Laurie Lewis and the Right Hands in the intimate setting of the President’s Saloon, dockside on board the USS Potomac. Tours are available starting at 6:30 p.m., along with beer, wine and nibbles for sale. Tickets are $25 per person. All proceeds for this event support educational programs for East Bay children. Napa Time Machine
Step back in time and experience the days of cars of distinction. Come see 400 pre-1976 classics and hot rods at Napa’s Main Street Reunion, which takes place over two days with two amazing events. The show and shine event is from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, August 18 and the car show is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 19. Those interested in showing a pre-1976 car can download a registration form at www.mainstreetreunion.com, as pre-registration is recommended. Admission is free and Saturday’s event includes a goody bag, so bring your family and friends down to Napa’s Main Street and take a trip back in time.
