There’s an action-packed “it’s the start of summer” vibe floating in the air, and with it are some prominent events to note on your calendar. For one, we are privileged in the Bay Area to be the first North American host of United Nations’ World Environment Day (June 5). Evenings are perfect for the “Night Market” at the Ferry Building, and the sailboats… lots of sailboats will be out in the Bay, especially during Summer Sailstice weekend (June 18-19). And remember, Father’s Day is June 19. June has arrived, and wither her she brings a bit of summer fog, and a multitude of exciting local events, art and entertainment!

Ferry Building Farmer’s Market
On Thursday evenings, May through October, the Ferry Building central passageway will be filled with Marketplace merchants and regional farmers offering ferry passengers, locals and visitors a night time shopping experience. Stroll and shop for artisan food, seasonal produce, and abundant choices in the comfortable, sophisticated ambiance of the sunset lit Grand Nave. The Night Market will continue to celebrate the integrity of the finest artisan and farm-fresh food products available in a convivial atmosphere, resplendent with music and communal tables for gathering with family and friends. World Environment Day 2005

San Francisco has the privilege of being the first city in North America to host the United Nation’s World Environment Day, a 33-year-old international event. There will be concerts, tree planting, hikes, bike rides, movie screenings, museum exhibits and art showings, including the 2005 winners of the UN Environment Program Children’s Painting Competition at Zeum. Aquarium of the Bay, The Marine Mammal Center, Oiled Wildlife Network Care Center, Save the Redwoods League, Forests Forever and Point Reyes Bird Society, all have special displays during this time. From On June 5, from Noon until 5pm, celebrate World Environment Day on Pier 39 enjoy some ecological, fun entertainment and games. Concerts on the Cove
Concerts on the Cove have become an Alameda summer tradition. On June 10th, local rock ‘n roll favorites, Eddie and the Boppers, lead off the 8th annual concert series with a tribute to the music of the 1950’s and 60’s. The series of free open-air musical events is held at Alameda’s Crab Cove from 5:30 to 7:30pm on the second Friday of each month during June, July and August. Free parking and free valet bicycle parking is available. Premium beer, wine from Rosenblum Cellars, and food from West Alameda restaurants will be on sale throughout the event. No outside alcohol is allowed in the park. On Saturday, June 18th, , in conjunction with the longest sailing weekend of the year, all six of Alameda’s yacht clubs join together in celebrating the first Summer Sailstice Open House. If you’ve ever thought of joining a yacht club, or would like to meet Bay Area boaters, the Summer Sailstice Open House is a great way to survey the scene. We encourage everyone to drive or sail by to have a look at all the terrific yacht clubs on the Alameda waterfront! Touring the clubs provides a view of the different locations, styles, prices and activities each provides - some might have a great junior program, while another might have a great adult program - but all have very active sailing members, and bring a lot of energy to the island. Yacht clubs will be open from 2-6pm with members available to give tours, answer questions about membership and activities, offer refreshments and show what each has to offer.
