Golden Gate Bridge Board of Directors Elect New Officers

On Friday, December 13, 2002, the Board of Directors of the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District elected Stanley Smith, Jr. as its 36th president. Maureen Middlebrook was elected first vice president and Maryanne Harrison was elected second vice president. They will each serve a two-year term beginning January 1, 2003.

On Friday, December 13, 2002, the Board of Directors of the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District elected Stanley Smith, Jr. as its 36th president. Maureen Middlebrook was elected first vice president and Maryanne Harrison was elected second vice president. They will each serve a two-year term beginning January 1, 2003.

Stanley Smith was appointed to the Board by San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown in February 1996 and serves as one of nine San Francisco representatives. During his tenure on the Board, he has served as vice chair of the District’s Transportation Committee and as a member of the Rules, Policy, and Industrial Relations Committee and the Governmental Affairs and Public Information Committee. Smith has served as secretary-treasurer and business representative of the San Francisco Building and Construction Trades Council, AFL-CIO since 1975. Prior to that, he served as field representative for Glaziers Union Local #718 from 1965 to 1975 and as its president from 1958 to 1965. From 1958 to 1975, he was a member of the Flat Glass Industry Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee. Smith has also served on the Executive Committee of the California State Building Trades Council and as vice president of the San Francisco Labor Council from 1990 to 1995. Smith is active in a number of community projects including serving as the secretary of the Board of Directors to the Ella Hill Hutch Community Center in the Western Addition, president of the Board of Young Community Developers in Bayview/Hunters Point, and chair of the Mission Bay Community Advisory Committee.

In 1992, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors appointed Maureen Middlebrook as one of three Sonoma County representatives. She served as the second vice president of the Board for the last two years and has most recently served as chair of the Rules, Policy, and Industrial Relations Committee and as a member of the Building and Operating Committee. Active in transportation issues, Middlebrook was also once a member of the Sonoma County Transportation Authority Citizen Advisory Committee. Middlebrook is a public affairs consultant working with a variety of clients including Empire Waste, Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce, and Sonoma Technology and Manufacturing Group. Previously, she was the assistant general manager at Empire Waste, a public affairs representative for Pacific Gas and Electric, and vice president of Sonoma Financial Corporation.

In March 2001, Maryanne Harrison joined the Board as an appointee by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. She has most recently served as a member of the Transportation Committee and the Rules, Policy, and Industrial Relations Committee. Since 1995, Harrison has been employed as the Director of Extended Care for the St. Vincent de Paul School in San Francisco and worked with Bank of America. She is a member and past president of the Auxiliary to the St. Vincent de Paul Youth Club and a member of the Auxiliary of Little Children’s Aid of San Francisco. She is also a past member of Archdiocese of the San Francisco School Board, Sacred Heart Cathedral High School Parents Association, and St. Vincent de Paul Parents Association.
