about it, our encomium (“formal or high-flown expression of praise”)
to the Blue and Gold Fleet on the occasion of its 25th anniversary.
The pride of the San Francisco Bay ferry fleet is still chuggin’
along, weathering heavy storms of post-9/11 tourist droops and
flaccid funding for public transit better than might be expected.
Hat’s off to the men and women of this doughty organization.

Whither the Blue Angels? |
The U.S. Navy once held sway on San Francisco
Bay until President Lyndon Johnson, piqued by anti-war protests, began
dismantling Bay bases until today there are none. Still, Bay Areas,
particularly in the City, continue to go out of their way to provide special
welcomes to visiting naval personnel. Confusion and controversy have entered
the mix, however, and it may be one reason why the Blue Angels won’t be
coming back anytime soon.

Bridge Elsewhere? |
By the time
you read this, we are p-r-a-y-i-n-g that Regional Measure 2 (RM-2)
has passed, raising bridge tolls and starting funds flowing to
improved public transit, including expanded ferry service. But from
the caterwauling of SUV-fetishists, you’d think the measly $1 hike
was deserving of a Mel Gibson treatment. We look at the facts.
