Hanging Ten at Hanger One

Coming to you from the shores of the Oakland Estuary, from the very building where the Red Trains of yore were maintained before the sad shutting down of the region’s interconnected ferry/rail system: the vodka of the moment. Hanger One is an exquisitely blended concoction of grapes, wheat and, most especially, distilled fruits culled from Northern California’s finest farms. Our new featured food and wine editor Steve Smith, General Manager of the late, great Lapis restaurant visits with the proprietor and distiller of St. George’s. More...

Bay CrossingsJournal Southern Cross

Stephen Stills and David Crosby don’t tuck their shirts into their pants anymore. Wide chested men, both. They sport their California rags with pride. David’s face has taken on a pink flora patina. Stephen has a raspy beard. His gray hair doesn’t flow in silken white curvelets like David’s. More...

Port of Call: Aqaba, Jordan

"We’ve taken Aqaba," mutters a crusty Peter O’Toole when he encounters a tad bit of difficulty ordering a lemonade with ice at the British officer’s club in Cairo because of his turban and robes, filthy and tattered after crossing the Sinai to report his victory. The small port town he had recently conquered was a critical gateway to a large area of southern Palestine and what is today Jordan. More...
