World Famous Jazz House Remains at Jack London Square through 2017

The Port of Oakland has approved a 10-year lease extension with Yoshi’s world-famous jazz house and popular Japanese restaurant at Jack London Square (JLS). Board President John Protopappas said, “Jack London Square has been home to Yoshi’s since 1997 and we’re delighted that this important cultural East Bay gem will remain at the Square through 2017.”
In 2002, Yoshi’s celebrated its five-year anniversary at JLS, as well as 30 years of offering great music in the East Bay. The nightclub is noted for attracting top names in the jazz world including renowned performers such as Nancy Wilson, Stanley Clarke, and Chick Corea.

The lease with the Port of Oakland covers 17,277 square feet for both the nightclub and restaurant.

Over the ten-year lease, Yoshi’s will generate income for the Port of Oakland and the City of Oakland as well as city tax revenues. “Yoshi’s at Jack London Square was originally a joint redevelopment project between the Port and the City of Oakland,” said Tay Yoshitani, the Port’s Executive Director. “Yoshi’s is recognized as one of the best jazz clubs in the world and we’re proud to have this fine establishment located at the Oakland waterfront where it will maintain its East Bay heritage.”
The majority of Yoshi’s 120 employees are Oakland residents, which is consistent with the Port of Oakland’s on-going efforts to encourage local hiring. “We want to thank Council President Ignacio De La Fuente for his instrumental role in the success of the final agreement,” stated Omar Benjamin, director of commercial real estate for the Port. The current lease runs to 2007. “Yoshi’s is another reason why our Jack London District is a great place to live, work and play.”
