Bay Crossings Docks at Ferry Building

Why would Bay Crossings open a store in the Ferry building? Because until the WTA is up and running – and that could be years off – there exists no ferry ticket or information service for anyone but the Golden Gate Ferry riders who have their own terminal. Left out in the cold are riders from and to Vallejo, Alameda, Oakland and Tiburon, as well as thousands of tourists wanting to get on the Bay. More...

Point Molate: Waterfront Dream or Terrorist Nightmare?

Surrounding this piece of paradise, however, is the Chevron Texaco Refinery. The company’s executives envision nightmarish scenarios if the public gains access to Point Molate. They are pressuring the City to fence it off as a security area or to allow industrial uses only. More...

What is it about ancient ferryboats that inspire people to save them, or try at least? Now comes the drama of the Kalakala (kah-LOCK-a-lah), the world’s first and arguably only, fully streamlined ferry. Will Seattle and San Francisco get into a tug-of-war? More...

Park for Lucretia Edwards, Richmond Legend

Lucretia Edwards has a new park in Richmond named after her. The 2-acre park in the Marina Bay neighborhood is opening this month. It’s a fitting honor for Lucretia. As Richmond legend has it, she started and led the crusade to turn many acres of the City’s industrial areas into waterfront parks for the public. Her efforts are said to have influenced the formation of the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) and Save the Bay. More...

Point Molate: Waterfront Dream or Terrorist Nightmare?

Many in the City of Richmond have dreams for Point Molate—a secluded, mostly undeveloped, 290-acre strip of waterfront nestled in Richmond’s Potrero Hills north of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. It offers spectacular views of the San Francisco and San Pablo Bays, the Marin hills, and the bridge from its 500-foot high ridge top down to the water’s edge. In late September, the Navy turned the deed to Point Molate over to the City. Now dreams for allowing the public in and for creating a Bay-front gem—a large park, homes, and a retreat center—tantalize the City more than ever. More...

Is There Room on the Bay for the Kalakala?

Quite possibly, the historic ferry Kalakala is headed for San Francisco. And that then raises the question of what can be done with her? Obviously a place in the Bay is needed, but that then raises the issue of whether or not the BCDC will allow her a place or declare her as "fill." More...
